“Some say “Don’t ask for help. God helps the ones who help themselves. So press on; get it right, otherwise get left behind. Some say “He’s keeping score, so try hard, then try a little more.” But hold up—if this were true, explain to me what the cross is for? What if I were the one to tell you that the fight’s already been won? Well, I think your day’s about to get better. What if I were the one to tell you that the work’s already been done? It’s not good news—it’s the best news ever! So come, all you weary and you burdened, you heavy-laden and you hurting. For all you who have nothing left, come and find rest.”
This song speaks the truth that we cannot earn God’s favor or work our way into heaven. God does not keep score; it’s not about trying hard—it’s about believing. It’s not about earning his favor or any good works that we might do. God gives eternal rest for our souls by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. That is the best news ever!”
Romans 3:23-25a ”…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through his shedding of his blood – to be received by faith.”
Questions: What does it mean to you that “the work has already been done?” Why is this the best news ever? Have you ever thought that God is “keeping score” of the good and bad things you do? What are you learning from this song that helps you understand that God is not a heavenly scorekeeper?
Prayer Power: Thank you, Lord, for doing for us what we could not do for ourselves. We are sinners, but you saved us by your grace through faith in your Son Jesus who redeemed us by sacrificing himself for us. We are grateful. Thank you for choosing us to be part of your eternal family.
