Mama Bear

Mama Bear

I was reminded of young motherhood recently when I had the privilege of helping my son, daughter-in-law, and toddler grandson when their second baby was due.  I was grateful my Body & Soul® classes had strengthened and energized me for the three-week adventure with a toddler and new baby!

But within hours of arriving at their home we experienced our first toddler accident – under Grandma’s watch!  I felt terrible as Rowan tumbled off the air mattress he was sitting on as I read to him, catching his ear on a bedside chair.  A gash and big bruise (and shaking Grandma) resulted.  As I carried him downstairs to his mama’s arms, she was so gentle and patient (comforting to both Rowan and Grandma,) but also protective.  Thankfully, he healed quickly and doesn’t have any lingering trauma.

FBD17260 3A85 46A6 954E FF04FBC34F4BGod uses a mother’s protective and gentle care to characterize His even greater love for us, his children. (Isaiah 66:13) Just as he is mighty to save, as most Mama’s are when a child needs to be defended, he is also able to comfort and console no matter the hurt.  (Zephaniah 3:17) Our loving heavenly Father went so far as to offer Himself in defense against our sin.  Jesus Christ went to the cross to pay for our sins so that all who believe could be His forever children, defended against sin, Satan, and death. His strong defense is sure, and His ever-present comfortis available for all who call upon Him.

Isaiah 66:13  “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.” (NIV)

Zephaniah 3:17  “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” (ESV)

Reflection:  Who needs to know God as their loving heavenly Father?  Who in your life needs His defense, comfort, and salvation?

Dear Lord, help me to rest in my Father’s care and comfort, and help me invite others to know Him too.
